Caviar & Bananas, a fresh cafe and market added on the bustling North Laurens Street, introduces a New York City atmosphere to Downtown Greenville. With a motto of “gourmet every day,” the café offers a variety of food choices. It debuted August 10 and became the first out-of-low-country Caviar & Bananas. They have three other locations in Charleston, SC and plan on adding another café to Nashville, TN.

The owners of the business, Margaret and Kris Furniss, previously lived in New York City where they had a similar business. They wanted to bring the city atmosphere to the south, so the couple picked their first Caviar & Bananas location to be in Charleston (2008). The general manager of the Greenville location, Ryan LaFleur, explains why the owners chose Greenville as their next location. He says, “[Greenville] is the fastest growing city in the United States right now.”

Flowers arrange near the windows with an artsy assortment and modern feel, while candies and colorful lollipops decorate another wall. Adding a blend of modern and classy style, mosaic tile floors combine with wood. Spotlights line the ceiling and mix with natural light through the windows. Outside near the tables are bicycles for delivery.

When you enter the marketplace you are greeted with hospitality. For a first-timer, the layout can be confusing, but an employee will explain where to go. The café/market offers sandwiches, pastries, chocolates, crafted coffee, alcohol, salads, and prepared food. First is the counter, where meat and salads are available. If sandwiches are what you’re feeling, you will receive a ticket after you order. The Zucchini Toastie is a delicious sandwich option with housemade ricotta cheese blending well with the shredded zucchini. After picking up a sandwich ticket or receiving food from the counter, it’s confusing as to where to go next to pay. However, workers are ready to help at every turn.

A mini market is available for interesting drinks and other organic foods. There are several options for drinks including glass bottles with numerous brands and flavors. Beyond that section, there is a counter that offers coffee, teas and the bakery with desserts. This counter offers gluten free selections like muffins and coconut macaroons. Inside and outside tables of the café are available. Outside tables face the alley/decorative buildings and give a cheerful atmosphere as you eat. The place offers to-go catering as well and a separate menu.

Caviar & Bananas blends right into the modern-mix style of North Laurens Street. It supports homemade treats from other companies and gives a diverse set of choices. The layout/order is new and different to Greenville, but it is very interesting and adds yet another great aspect to the growing city.
