FFA Makes an Enlightened Return from Indy

The FFA officers as they depart the National Convention

The Future Farmers of America is an organization that is near and dear to the hearts of many in Travelers Rest. With service projects and competitions, they are always representing TR and helping the community. From the greenhouse here at the high school, to plant sales and competitions, there is rarely a dull moment for this FFA chapter. With 40 members, FFA is a very popular extracurricular activity.

This October, the officers made the trip up to Indianapolis for the annual FFA National Convention. When asked about the purpose for this trip, President Hunter Capps, junior at TRHS, responded, “We wanted to learn more about how to get more members and keep them involved.” Another officer, junior Rachelle Crabbe said, “They learned how to grow and improve TR’s FFA chapter.” The activities, all taking place from Oct. 25 through 28, included workshops, competitions, and even a Rascal Flatts concert. With 65,000 people in attendance, the convention took over the city of Indianapolis.

Returning home with better knowledge of how to work together, attract more members, and engage the student body as a whole, the officers are already looking forward to next year’s convention. Ms. Canupp, the school advisor, said, “We set a lot of goals. We are going to start a newsletter and push our social media.”  Leadership workshops united the officers and brought up ways to make the TRHS chapter more prominent. These ideas will surely add to the continual growth of FFA in Travelers Rest.
