Girls’ tennis takes it to the court

The girls’ tennis team has been a prosperous piece of Travelers Rest High School’s history for years. Bringing multiple region titles and a State Championship home in the past, the team has been looked to as one with strong unity for years now.

After years of coaching from Kirby Alford, the team has gained Michele Burton as their new head coach, and she seems to be promising for the team. As a starter on the team, freshman Eliza Pearl Philpot says, “She is very encouraging and supportive of everyone, and we love her a lot.”

Senior Ceara Dias says, “It is definitely a change, having a new coach and losing two of our leaders, but we will still have that bond because it is so important.” Dias looks to help lead her team to their fifth consecutive region title this season, but they must still face Eastside High School, their toughest competitor. Dias continues, “Eastside has a lot of young girls who have all played a while, giving them a deep lineup.”

So far the girls have a winning record of 5-1 overall and are undefeated in the region. They earned a huge win 5-1 against Eastside Monday night at home.

In the midst of all this change, a new realm has been reached as the Devildogs move up to 4A. This could slightly alter what TR tennis has always known. Competing against new teams with new players creates a foggy future since familiarity has been left behind with the division change. One of the unknowns is what type of team Union will bring to the table. Another challenge will be playing at Christ Church on Thursday, September 29th. They are not in TR’s region, but are always a strong competitor.

The future of the team looks bright, only having three seniors and a lot of depth throughout the roster. In fact, in terms of experience, three team members remain from the 2013 State Champion team and are underclassmen.

Despite the changes and definite challenges of the season, the Travelers Rest Girls’ Tennis team looks to maintain their sisterhood, fun-loving nature, and drive to win.
