Hype for Hoco Builds

Homecoming 2018 will officially kick off at Travelers Rest High School with the Homecoming dance at 8:00pm on Saturday. Excitement is at an all-time high as students are clamoring for float-building and the hunt for the spirit rock to begin. Student Council has chosen this year’s theme to “Bringing Pixar to Life.” The seniors have chosen Toy Story, juniors have Monsters Inc., sophomores will build a Finding Nemo float, and freshmen were given The Incredibles.

After everyone dances the night away on Saturday, many bleary-eyed students will gather Sunday afternoon to begin construction on this year’s round of floats. Working for many hours, everyone will tremble with anticipation for the first riddle in finding the spirit rock. The hunt for the spirit rock is one of TR’s most time-honored traditions, and students will be scrambling all over the property trying to find it as clues are released every day. Also, starting this year, there will be a book drive taking place during Homecoming week where the winning class walks away with an extra 100 points. All books will be donated to the Frazee Center.

After the hunt for the spirit rock and the parade are over, there is just one final competition between the classes: the spirit stick. At the pep rally on Friday afternoon, students will chant until their voices give out to prove which class has the most school spirit. All of this competition can lead to tension between the classes, but on Friday night, the student body will unify in cheering for the undefeated Devildogs in the first region game of the season. From the dance to the final seconds of the game, this is an amazing week where we see the whole community of Travelers Rest come together to celebrate the past, present, and future.

Note: the first game against Blue Ridge, played earlier this season, does not count for region play and was recorded as an out-of-conference win.
