JV Football Wins Season Opener
The Travelers Rest junior varsity football team played the Carolina Trojans on Sept. 8. The Devildogs were phenomenal in their debut for the 2017 season as they won 50-0. It was a long-awaited season opener as their previous scheduled games were cancelled, one to weather and the other to Berea’s shortage of players.
The team is led by coach Tommy Waynick, with his coaching career spanning over a decade. With coach Waynick’s experience and JV’s talent, you can expect big things for the team this year. Freshman quarterback Cam Henderson started for TR as quarterback and played exceptionally well, throwing two touchdowns against the Trojans, blowing through their defense. The first quarter was filled with penalties and mental mistakes before cleaning it up the second quarter. Brooks and Bradley Martin also scored well and Brooks even created a turnover in the second half.
Left guard Tommy Janosky was excited about the game, but mentioned, “There is a lot of things that the team still needs to work on.” The Devildogs have a bright future for football and they certainly proved it in the season opener.
