Released worldwide on the 21st of July, 2023, Oppenheimer is a biographical thriller directed by Christopher Nolan, which focuses mainly on the story of how Julius Robert Oppnehimer (Cillian Murphy), along with US Army engineer Leslie Groves (Matt Damon), created the Los Alamos Testing Site and developed the first atomic bomb. However, it also covers a lesser known side of Oppenheimer’s life in which he was put on trial by the United States Atomic Energy Commission, where he was faced with losing his security clearance due to his association with the American Communist Party, in addition to the AEC chairman Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr) claiming that he was a spy for the Soviet Union. The film was adapted from the biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, published in 2005 by authors Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.
The movie is a first of its kind as Nolan uses a variety of filming techniques and practical effects, one of which saw the production team create an explosion that was as close to the real life Trinity Test as possible, and for the first time in film history, black and white IMAX film was specially created for use in certain scenes. Among all of the visual features, there are also many auditory elements which help to amplify the 3 hour long biopic and create a film that you experience rather than just watch. In early August, Oppenheimer hit the $550 million mark at the box office, achieving the status of 4th highest grossing movie of 2023, and officially becoming the highest grossing World War 2 movie, surpassing the 2017 film Dunkirk, also created by Nolan.
