Red Ribbon Week 2017
The rising drug and alcohol problem in schools across America has led to growing efforts to put such issues to an end. One of these efforts is Red Ribbon Week, which any Greenville County student would recognize. The 2017 theme for Red Ribbon Week was ‘Your Future is Key.’ The goal was to inform students of the dangers that come along with substance abuse at a young age. Teachers hoped that with this information, students would be deterred from making the choice to drink or do drugs.
Red Ribbon Week is an interactive week in which students can dress up and wear ribbons to raise awareness. Red Ribbon Week 2017 showcased ideas such as Senior Citizen Day and Blue and Gold Day. Even teachers dressed up and designed decorations for the annual door decorating contest, which was won by Mr. Simms. Ms. Brailsford, the school’s keyboarding and computer apps teacher, oversaw Red Ribbon Week. She stated, “If this can help just one student, then it has been a success.”
By providing a more relaxed approach to such a sensitive topic, Red Ribbon Week tries to help students realize that they can have a better, cleaner future ahead of them.
