Senior Abby Epps donates blood

Student Council kicked off their first blood drive of the year on October 21st, 2016. Around 50 students were able to participate in this event, which was a drastic decline as Student Council normally averages around 80 students.

The Blood Drive has been an event Student Council has sponsored for several years. Co-Adviser, Norman Nolen, said “there was a desire for our school to hosts a blood drive, and since no other organization wanted to do it, Student Council has been ever since.” Even though Student Council gets no profit from this event, they help advertise and set up the blood drive so as many students as possible can donate.

For senior Cassidy Freeman, this was her second blood drive. When asked what made her want to give blood again, she responded, “I know there is someone out there that needs this blood more than I do right now.”

Even though there was a smaller turnout than normal, The Blood Connection’s school recruitment manager, Ashley Sweet, was still pleased. “We need over 400 donors a day to help supply over the 30 hospitals we donate to, and anything helps as one pint can have the potential to save up to three lives” said Sweet.

The Student Council will host two more blood drives this school year. The next one will be coming up this winter, and hopefully more students will be able to participate to help save as many lives as possible during the holiday season.
