TRHS “cans” hunger for local food crisis ministry

Cans donated by students

Every year, right before, Thanksgiving break, TRHS Student Council puts on a canned food drive for the North Greenville Food Crisis Ministry. This year, the drive was during the week of November 14th through the 18th. In the past, Student Council has set a goal for the number of cans donated, but this year their only goal was to raise as many cans as possible.
What really drives students to donate cans is when their teachers provide incentives. Sometimes it is something as small as a partner quiz, but other times, a full sheet of notebook paper for the final exam is on the line. Mr Eudy offered his Bio 2 Honors class an extended due date for their projects if they collectively donated 700 cans, and Mrs Mauldin gave her class an open notes test for bringing in over 200 cans. All week, students are scrounging their pantries and cabinets trying to find spare cans to bring in. They walked into school, cans in hand, or rather in a bag, ready to turn them in hoping they reach their class goal. With the cans being incurably heavy, Student Council members often had to take multiple carts out to students’ carts to help them bring in the cans.

This years Canned Food Drive raised 6,436 cans. Student Council advisor Deanna McCarroll said this number is 400 more than last year. She added that the North Greenville Food Crisis Ministry is “very, very grateful” for all of the donations we give them every year. TR students are able the chance to give back to their community. While many only bring in cans to get their class incentive, they can also be comforted by knowing they helped someone less fortunate than themselves.
