Hurricane Matthew’s devastation continues to affect South Carolina students. With homes along the coast still submerged, basic necessities such as clothing are in desperate demand.

To help meet this need, the Travelers Rest High School National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Student Council have banded together to collect clothes during the Thanksgiving canned food drive from November 14 to Friday, November 18. A collection table waits in the Commons for donations of gently-used articles of clothing.

Mrs. Cassandra Brailsford, school and state sponsor of the Beta Club, presented the idea of the clothing drive to the NHS and Student Council. “[We] had been wanting to reach beyond the community [of Travelers Rest],” she says. “When Hurricane Matthew hit, there was an opportunity to do just that. Working for a common good, [our school] is united and allows us to work as a team.”

A community-wide collection is taking place during the TRHS Band Craft Show on Saturday, November 19. Members of the Beta Club and National Honor Society will be stationed in the TRHS Commons from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and they encourage everyone throughout Travelers Rest and Greenville to contribute clothing towards the drive. All donations will support Lowcountry students and their families affected by Hurricane Matthew.
